When a CA202 accelerometer signal conditioner inside a VM600 machinery protection rack begins showing erratic readings, moisture intrusion is one of the first suspects we check. The 144-202-000-105 variant includes a dedicated moisture drop seal, but even with that protection, condensation can still find its way in over time. I’ve seen modules pulled from humid environments where the seal looked intact yet internal insulation resistance had dropped below acceptable limits. While replacement is sometimes the only answer, a careful drying procedure can get many units back into service. This article walks through what the seal does, how to inspect it, and when drying is a safe recovery path versus when you should source a new module.

Understanding the CA202 Moisture Drop Seal Design

The CA202 is the standard IEPE accelerometer interface module within the VM600 rack architecture, conditioning signals from accelerometers monitoring rotating machinery. Part number 144-202-000-105 adds a moisture insulation drop seal treatment to the circuit board assembly. This seal is a conformal coating applied over components and solder joints, not a separate gasket. Its job is to block condensation paths that can form across closely spaced pins or under IC packages when the ambient humidity inside the rack crosses the dew point. In practice, we find that coastal and tropical installations see this problem most, where daily temperature swings create condensation cycles. The drop seal reduces but does not eliminate the risk, especially if the rack enclosure itself is not adequately sealed or purged.

Inspecting the Moisture Seal and Detecting Leakage

The first sign of moisture trouble is often erratic signal output or a channel fail alarm in the VM600 monitoring software. Before attributing it to a sensor or cabling fault, remove the CA202 from its rack and look for physical evidence: white powdery residue on connector pins, discoloration around IC leads, or a tacky feel on the conformal coating surface. Then, with the module disconnected from power, measure insulation resistance between the 24 V supply input and rack chassis ground. A healthy, dry module typically shows tens of megohms. If the reading is below 10 MΩ, moisture has created leakage paths. Do not reinstall the module in this state, as continued energizing can accelerate electrochemical corrosion and eventually destroy fine traces.

Drying a Wet CA202 Module Step by Step

When a module has absorbed moisture but shows no physical damage, low temperature baking can often restore it. We apply this procedure in our workshop and have recovered multiple units:

  1. Remove the module from the VM600 rack. Clean any visible white residue or corrosion on connector contacts using isopropyl alcohol and lint free swabs, being careful not to scrub the conformal coating itself.
  2. Place the module on a heat resistant tray inside a vented oven. Set the temperature to exactly 55°C (131°F). Do not exceed 60°C, as plastic components and capacitors can degrade at higher temperatures.
  3. Bake for 12 hours, ensuring air circulates freely around the module.
  4. Turn off the oven and allow the module to cool to room temperature inside, without forced cooling. After 30 minutes, measure insulation resistance again with a 100 V insulation tester. A reading above 20 MΩ indicates the moisture has been driven out successfully.
  5. If the reading remains between 10 and 20 MΩ, repeat the bake cycle for 6 hours at the same temperature. If after two cycles the resistance does not reach 20 MΩ, replacement is the only reliable option.

Never use a high temperature hot air gun or compressed air to try to speed up drying. Rapid heating can expand trapped moisture and delaminate the PCB layers, while compressed air can force water into connector bodies.

When we assisted a pulp and paper mill after a steam pipe rupture near their VM600 rack, three CA202 modules were affected. Two recovered fully after a single 12 hour bake; the third needed a second cycle but then held stable insulation resistance for over a year. That experience convinced us that a controlled drying attempt is worth the effort before sourcing a replacement.

If after two drying cycles the insulation resistance stays low, or you notice lifted conformal coating or blackened tracks under magnification, the module cannot be trusted. At that point, ordering a replacement is the quickest path back to reliable machinery protection.

Replacing the CA202 144-202-000-105 When Drying Fails

Permanent moisture damage often leaves visible marks: corroded vias, dark spots where electrolytic corrosion has eaten copper, or a gummy coating that no longer adheres. Internal measurements with a milliohm meter sometimes show high resistance on bus traces. A module in this state can fail intermittently, giving the false impression it has healed, only to trip again under vibration. The cost of an unplanned machinery shutdown will far exceed the price of a replacement module, so our recommendation is to replace any unit that does not pass a post bake insulation test above 20 MΩ or that shows physical signs of advanced corrosion. What is the difference between CA202 144-202-000-105 and the -203 variant?

The -105 variant includes the moisture insulation drop seal treatment, while the -203 variant does not. The -203 is intended for dry environments or cabinets with positive pressure purge. If your rack is in a humid area without active humidity control, always select the -105. Using a non sealed module in those conditions almost guarantees a repeat moisture failure.

Can I use a desiccant pack inside the rack to prevent moisture?

Desiccant packs can help reduce ambient humidity inside a sealed enclosure, but they are not a replacement for the module’s own moisture seal. Once the desiccant saturates, it stops working and may even release moisture back into the enclosure during temperature changes.
