CA202 144-202-000-203/205/105: Sensitivity Code & Connector Buying Guide

When a CA202 accelerometer replacement is specified as 144-202-000-203, 144-202-000-205, or 144-202-000-105, the suffix is not an internal warehouse code. It determines how the sensor sends vibration data to the monitor, how the cable exits the housing, and whether the channel will read correctly. In VM600 rotating machinery protection and condition monitoring systems, choosing the wrong suffix can cause false trips, missed alarms, or repeated return visits.

What the CA202 suffix actually controls

The CA202 is a piezoelectric accelerometer used for bearing housing, gearbox, pump, compressor, and spindle vibration measurement. In a VM600 installation, it is usually connected to a signal conditioning card such as the IPC704 or another rack module, and the conditioned value becomes the vibration amplitude used for alarm and trip decisions.

For the three suffix numbers most often requested:

  • 144-202-000-203 — standard sensitivity grade with a top-exit connector; the most common replacement for bearing pedestal and machine casing mounting.
  • 144-202-000-205 — typically shares the same sensing element family but uses a side-exit connector; selected when cable routing is horizontal or clearance above the sensor is limited.
  • 144-202-000-105 — a different sensitivity/frequency class, generally specified where the application covers higher acceleration levels or bearing fault frequency division work.

Always confirm the code against the existing label or the channel configuration. Different OEM batches and regional versions can carry small differences, but the suffix is the primary matching point.

Why sensitivity code affects more than signal level

A sensitivity code is not only a calibration note. In a VM600 system, the signal conditioning module is set to a known transducer sensitivity. If the replacement sensor has a different sensitivity grade than the configured channel, the rack will calculate the wrong engineering-unit value.

A simple example: if the configured channel expects a standard CA202 sensitivity and the installed unit is a different grade, a 10 mm/s vibration level may be displayed as 6 mm/s or 18 mm/s. That is not a sensor defect. It is a matching error. The machine may run unprotected.

Before ordering:

  • Read the old model code from the sensor body or nameplate.
  • Check the IPC704, IQS450, or other conditioner channel sensitivity setting.
  • If the monitor has a calibration report, match the suffix to that report.
  • If the original sensor is unreadable, use the rack configuration and the existing cable connector as cross-reference.

Connector orientation: top-exit vs side-exit

The difference between the 203 and 205 suffix is often mechanical. Both may deliver the same vibration signal, but the cable exit changes how the sensor fits into the machine.

Factor Top-exit connector Side-exit connector
Cable direction Vertical from mounting face Horizontal along machine housing
Best installation Open space above bearing cap Low-clearance covers, gearbox cases
Typical risk Connector can be struck by guards or tools Cable strain if bend radius is too tight
Replacement impact Requires vertical cable clearance Requires lateral clearance and cable clamp

If a 203 is replaced with a 205, the existing cable may be too short or its strain relief may be in the wrong position. Do not assume connector interchangeability without checking the routing.

CA202 suffix selection at a glance

Suffix Sensitivity/application class Connector style Common use
144-202-000-203 Standard general-purpose vibration Top-exit Pump, compressor, fan bearing housing
144-202-000-205 Standard sensitivity family Side-exit Gearbox, turbine cover, confined cable path
144-202-000-105 Higher acceleration/frequency band grade Confirm with current label Bearing fault frequency division, CNC spindle, gear mesh

Use this table as a starting point, not a final specification. For critical machines, verify the exact full-scale output and frequency range against the original sensor datasheet before purchase.

7-point buying checklist

  1. Model suffix — confirm 203, 205, or 105 from the sensor body.
  2. Signal conditioner sensitivity — check IPC704/IQS450 or equivalent channel setting.
  3. Connector orientation — top exit or side exit, including mating thread.
  4. Cable length and armor — longer machine runs may need longer cable codes.
  5. Mounting thread — verify base thread fits the existing bracket or surface.
  6. Hazardous area rating — replace like-for-like if the plant requires ATEX/IECEx.
  7. Calibration status — new sensors should include test data; after installation, verify with a known signal source or calibrator if possible.

Common replacement mistakes

  • Guessing by photo. Two CA202 units can look identical but have different sensitivity codes. Always read the part number.
  • Swapping 203 and 205 without cable check. Even if the signal is the same, the cable may not reach.
  • Replacing a 105 with a 203 because it is available. This can overload or underload the conditioner channel and shift the system response.
  • Ignoring the conditioning module setting. The sensor can be perfect, but the channel will still read wrong if sensitivity is not updated.

FAQ

Can I replace a 203 with a 205?

Only if the connector orientation and sensitivity grade match the existing installation. The mechanical fit and cable strain relief must be checked first. Electrically they may be compatible, but the installation may not be.

How do I know which sensitivity code is correct?

Read the old label. If it is damaged, check the monitor channel configuration, the original calibration report, or the loop diagram. The CA202 suffix must match the configured signal conditioner.

What happens if the sensitivity code is wrong?

The measured vibration amplitude will be scaled incorrectly, which can cause high vibration alarms or missed protection trips. It may also produce unstable condition monitoring trends.

Do I need calibration after installation?

For a new CA202, the sensor is supplied with calibration data. The installed loop should still be validated with a known signal source or calibrator before the machine returns to operation.
