CA202 144-202-000-203 vs 144-202-000-105: Frequency Band Guide
The CA202 accelerometer part number is not just a reference code. The suffix determines charge sensitivity, usable linear frequency band, and how the VM600 signal conditioning channel must be scaled. The two common replacements, 144-202-000-203 and 144-202-000-105, are physically similar but are not interchangeable without checking the monitoring configuration.
Why the frequency band matters
Machinery protection systems need to detect both low-frequency faults and high-frequency events. Unbalance shows near shaft speed. Misalignment often appears at 2× shaft speed. Bearing defects, gear mesh, and blade pass events appear much higher, typically in the kilohertz range. If the accelerometer response drops off too early, those high-frequency signals lose amplitude. The result is reduced sensitivity to early-stage bearing or gear damage.
Main difference between the two CA202 variants
Both sensors belong to the same CA202 family and share the same general mounting and connector style. The difference is the sensitivity/frequency trade-off.
| Parameter | CA202 144-202-000-203 | CA202 144-202-000-105 |
|---|---|---|
| Sensitivity class | Higher charge sensitivity | Lower charge sensitivity |
| Typical ±5% linear band | 1 Hz – 8 kHz | 2 Hz – 15 kHz |
| Typical ±10% linear band | 0.5 Hz – 10 kHz | 1 Hz – 20 kHz |
| Mounted resonance | >25 kHz | >35 kHz |
| Best application | Standard pumps, motors, fans, compressors | High-speed spindles, gearboxes, high-frequency fault detection |
These are typical design values. Always check the current datasheet or existing channel parameters before replacing a sensor.
When to select 144-202-000-203
Use the -203 version when:
- The asset is a standard industrial pump, motor, fan, or low-to-medium-speed compressor.
- Vibration levels are relatively low and stronger sensor output improves signal-to-noise ratio.
- The monitoring channel is already configured for CA202 -203.
- You need a general-purpose spare for existing VM600 casing vibration measurements.
The higher charge sensitivity of the -203 gives a stronger signal for low-amplitude vibration. However, on machines with high g levels, the input stage can saturate earlier.
When to select 144-202-000-105
Use the -105 version when:
- You need to capture bearing defect frequencies, gear mesh harmonics, or blade pass events above 6–8 kHz.
- The machine operates at high speed, such as gearboxes, centrifugal compressors, or precision spindles.
- The existing channel is already scaled for the lower-sensitivity sensor.
- High vibration levels might overload a standard sensitivity sensor.
The -105 trades output amplitude for a wider usable high-frequency band. For low-speed balance and misalignment information, the signal conditioner may require more gain, but high-frequency fault detection is improved.
System and calibration notes
Both sensors connect to VM600 signal conditioning devices such as the IPC704 or IQS450. Before replacing one part number with the other:
- Set the correct charge sensitivity and full-scale range in the monitoring system.
- Check cable length and shield continuity. Long cables can attenuate high-frequency signal content.
- Use a 204-215-000-101 calibrator or equivalent to verify the channel after replacement.
- Confirm alarm thresholds and trip logic remain valid after changing the sensor type.
Replacing a -203 with a -105 without updating the scaling will produce incorrect vibration readings and may trigger false alarms or miss real faults. Treat the two variants as different sensing elements, not as interchangeable stock codes.
